Shake It Off

August 28, 2014

Someone asked me recently what I thought of Taylor Swift’s new song and video for “Shake It Off”…

via

Well, honestly, the first time I heard “Shake It Off” I absolutely hated it…
BUT I quickly realized that it was because it didn’t sound like Taylor Swift to me. I like the country music that Taylor Swift makes because the songs usually have stories behind them and they aren’t as repetitive as pop songs. I must say that I do love the message of this new song and I can definitely relate to it after dealing with more than my fair share of rude comments and judgmental people in my life. However, it still doesn’t feel like Taylor Swift to me and that’s what bothers me about it. In addition to this being a major departure from her usual style of music, the music video has caused a decent amount of complaints and minor controversy. Many people are debating as to wether or not parts of the video are too stereotypical or offensive. I’m not sure if I consider it offensive or not, but I would certainly agree that she’s using stereotypes to help to reinforce the point she’s making. More than anything, it’s a catchy song and it’s got a feel good message to it. All in all, I would say I like the song and I’ll admit that I did in fact purchase it on iTunes since Spotify didn’t have it released. I keep getting it stuck in my head!

What do you think of “Shake It Off”? Love it, hate it, couldn’t care less? Let me know in the comments and through Twitter!

I really love the song and the music video. I still love Taylor's country sound, but I think she's made the transition to her first pop album pretty gradually. Most of the songs are her last album were pretty poppy. As for the video, the people portrayed in the background are experts in their style of dance. I don't think it's necessary for people to get offended by the stereotypes because those people are portraying themselves. The people they chose for the music video aren't random people who happen to be good dancers; they're people who are trained in those particular styles. I pre-bought the album, and I'm really excited to hear Taylor's new sound. She's been in the music industry for such a long time now that if her music did stay the same, I would be shocked. I think as an artist, it's awesome that she's grown and her music has evolved with her.

I absolutely love this song! I think this new direction is fantastic and I cannot wait to see what the rest of her new album brings.
