Wisdom Wednesday: You Have Permission to Rest

As I write this, I’m sitting at home in my apartment and wishing that I hadn’t woken up from a nap last night with a high fever… Time to replenish? That would be an understatement today.

Today’s post is a reminder, from me to you (and honestly to myself as well), that we all need to give ourselves a chance to rest from time to time.

“You have permission to rest. You are not responsible for fixing everything that is broken. You do not have to try and make everyone happy. For now, take time for you. It’s time to replenish.” -Unknown

I know that I’m not alone in saying that my life moves pretty darn fast. There’s constantly something happening and any “free time” that I have gets filled just about as quickly as I realize I’ve got it. I’ve heard it from classmates, friends, coworkers, etc. that in this day and age it seems that a lot of us, myself included, have forgotten how and when to slow down. (more…)

Wisdom Wednesday: You Should Go & Love Yourself

Happy post-Valentine’s Day, y’all! Today is one of the best days of the year because candy and chocolate are on sale pretty much everywhere you go. So, go ahead and treat yourself!

Now, I never thought that I’d be quoting this person in a Wisdom Wednesday post, but… to quote Justin Bieber,

“You should go & love yourself.”

You may be thinking, “Megan, why on earth are you quoting ‘Love Yourself’ today?” (Besides the fact that it is a really great song, of course.) This post isn’t in quite the same sassy vein or context of Bieber’s song, but these words are important nonetheless. Here’s why…

Wisdom Wednesday: Soul Set On Fire

My last Wisdom Wednesday post went over quite well, so I decided to do another one for y’all this week!

“Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire” -Unknown

I just started my final semester of undergrad yesterday and it’s such a surreal feeling. I came across this “unknown” quote on Pinterest recently and thought that it was fitting for anyone who’s in the process of trying to pursue their passion(s) or find the next step on their pathway of life.

Wisdom Wednesday: There’s More to Come… And It’s Something Beautiful.

It’s been almost a year since I wrote my last Wisdom Wednesday post.

Back when I first started creating consistent content for Bowtiful Life, back in high school and at the beginning of college, these were always my favorite posts to write. Now, when I go through and read old content, the Wisdom Wednesday posts always stand out to me.

Later this month I will be celebrating my 5 year blogging anniversary.(!!!) It’s truly eye opening to look back at posts from years past and see that although so much has changed, some things have stayed the same. One of these things being my love of quotes, especially optimistic ones. I have a tendency to latch onto them when I find any that I particularly like and today I’m sharing one of my current favorites with you that I found through an author on Instagram, Victoria Erickson.

I found this quote and it resonated so deeply with me that I quickly surrounded myself with it. I wrote it down on a piece of paper and I stuck it onto the mirror that I look into each day when I get dressed, I put it up on my personal (private) Instagram account, I made it the caption of my profile picture on Facebook and I put it in my phone as my home screen so that I could look at it when I’m out an about.

I enveloped myself in these words as a gentle and loving reminder.

Wisdom Wednesday – If You Can’t Find One, Be One.

Bowtiful Life Wisdom Wednesday 2016 03-30 The World Is Filled With Nice People

Living in a big city like Chicago, I’m constantly surrounded by people.

Sometimes, walking down the sidewalk can feel like I’m moving through a never-ending sea of faces. Each person is bustling along with their own to-do list in mind. So many are so intensely focused on their personal objectives for the day that they don’t even register the countless faces that pass by them.

As much as I hate to admit it, I’m also guilty of this at times.

When we rush around so much, we can forget to be nice. To others and to ourselves.

Let me rephrase that. “We forget to be kind.”

Adventures: The Best Way to Learn

It’s been a while since I shared a Wisdom Wednesday post, so today I’m talking about one of my current, favorite quotes:

“& then I realized, adventures are the best way to learn”

I took this photo just a few weeks ago while driving into the city with my mom. (Don’t worry, I was behind the lens and she was behind the wheel!) When I looked through all my photos later that day, this one really stood out to me and I realized that it invoked the same feeling that I used to get as a little girl when we’d go downtown. The buildings standing majestically on the horizon, the rush of cars down Lake Shore Drive, the bustle of the city waiting for our arrival, and the upbeat sense of adventure and excitement that I would feel in my stomach.

Even after all these years and going downtown almost every day for class, I still get a tingling of that feeling as the skyline unfolds in front of me. That sight and feeling is always a highlight of my day!

I honestly haven’t had the greatest few weeks recently, which is part of why I haven’t been posting quite as much as I’d like. Even though I’ve been really busy and pretty stressed, in an odd way, I’m actually really grateful for these times…

Now, before you call me crazy, hear me out.

I’ve found that time and time again, negative and/or difficult situations have a tendency to push me into a sunny disposition and force me to see silver linings in any situation. Difficult days, changes, and situations can really turn into adventures of you give them a chance!

I want to look at life more as an adventure, because as the quote says,

I’ve realized that they’re one of the best ways to learn.

If Not Now, Then When? – 2016 Inspiration

Happy 2016, lovelies! It’s a brand new year and that means that I’m going to have to remind myself for the next month or so to write “/16” at the end of anything I date, rather than “/15.” Who else will be riding that struggle bus with me?

2015 was a year of ups and downs. My family experienced the loss of some beloved friends and loved ones, which was incredibly difficult, but the positives of this past year truly outweighed the negatives. It was truly an amazing year! I met remarkable people, visited Teen Vogue in NYC, learned more about myself, started a new job, took some big steps with the blog, I explored the city I love, and so much more.

But most importantly,

I took more chances.

Bowtiful Life If Not Now, When? 2016 1

By taking more chances and giving myself opportunities to be spontaneous, I had the time of my life! I created countless memories with amazing friends, went for late night drives blasting music, danced without caring if anyone was watching me, and truly gave myself a shot at living life with “no regrets.” I can say with 100% honesty that I lived this year to the fullest and I have zero regrets for 2015.

If you find yourself saying “I’ll do that some day…” or “I’ll get around it it eventually…” at any point this year, stop yourself and ask the question:

“If not now, when?”

2016 gives each of us a fresh slate, a chance to start over and look at life in a new light and from a different angle. Take more chances, dance more dances. Give yourself the chance to be spontaneous this year and see where life leads you. You never know what you’ll find or what adventures might be waiting for you right around the corner! ♥

Happy 2016!

Motivational Monday: The “M” Word

I don’t know about all of you, but this weekend absolutely flew by for me! Granted, I was working both days, but this weekend felt especially short. Now that the weekend is over, it’s MONDAY. I’ve never understood people who “hate Mondays.” I’m definitely a morning person and I like being busy, so maybe that’s why I don’t hate the “M word” after a weekend. I saw this on Twitter today while I was headed downtown and had to share because I thought it was a great piece of Monday motivation and a nice little pick-me-up at the very beginning of the week!

I hope you all have an absolutely marvelous Monday and make the most of the day and this brand new week!

What You Are Not

Taylor Swift was in Chicago this past week for her 1989 tour and everyone I know who went said that it was absolutely amazing! I recently came across this video from when she was on tour in Manchester right before her song “Clean.” She gives a short little speech to help introduce the song and I loved it so much that I had to share it with you while highlighting a few of my favorite quotes.
“I’m gonna tell you now the things you actually are not, okay?
These are the things you really are not:

You are not the opinion of somebody who doesn’t know you. You are not “damaged goods” just because you’ve made mistakes in your life. You are not going nowhere just because you haven’t gotten where you want to go yet.”

“When you start to compare yourself to other people please change the channel in your mind to something else.”
“When it comes to how we see ourselves, other people are really mean, but we’re REALLY mean to ourselves.”
“You need to look into the mirror in the morning and not tell yourself that you’re not special, or you’re not good enough, or you’re not pretty, or you’re not awesome.”
“Now, I want to tell you what you are.
You are your own definition of beautiful and worthwhile, that’s what you are. You are someone who is wiser because you’ve made mistakes. Not damaged, wiser.”

“It’s not about perfection, it’s about just getting on with things sometimes. Sometimes you just get credit for getting up and going on with things and you don’t have to do it perfectly.”
I think that we mistake our mistakes for damage and we think other people will judge us for them.
They (mistakes) don’t make you damaged, they make you clean.

Rhyme & Reason

One of my all-time favorite quotes is “Everything happens for a reason.”
I spoke in a recent post about silver linings and how I do my best to find them in every situation. I think that this quote in particular takes that one step further and touches on the fact that you may not see a silver lining at first. Occasionally, it takes a bit more time to find the silver linings and positive after effects of an occurrence, but when you find them it all makes sense!
On my latest NYC trip I purchased this Alex & Ani bangle which I wear almost every day as a constant reminder of this quote!

Some may call it coincidence, but I truly believe that everything that happens transpires in a specific way because it is a part of something bigger. I’ve had many circumstances in my life where I’ve questioned why something seemingly negative has happened, but then I look back and realize that something wonderful came about in my life because that initial situation occurred.

Sometimes we’re put into situations that knock us down, but then we build ourselves back up and see that we’re stronger than ever before. Sometimes people criticize us and we take that criticism to become even better at what we do. Sometimes we lose friendships, but in the process we strengthen other friendships and build new ones. Sometimes we don’t do as well at something as we’d like to, but then we use our failure to propel us forward and inspire us to do 10x better the next time around.
One of the biggest occurrences to which I can connect this quote to was when I started blogging. As I discussed in a post I wrote in 2013, I started Bowtiful Life during my junior year of high school after having to take a break from dance. That break, which was so incredibly difficult and frustrating at the time, resulted in something that has become a huge and positive part of my life. Without that break, Bowtiful Life wouldn’t exist, none of you would be reading this post right now, and Lord only knows what I would be doing with my free time!
Everything happens for a reason, absolutely everything, and I am so grateful for that!
What do you think?
